Why we built Local Cost Calculator

A straight answer to "how much should this cost?" — built from published pricing data, not a single average buried in an article.

Most home and auto service pricing online falls into one of two buckets: a single national average with no context ("pest control costs $172"), or a wall of text you have to read start to finish just to find the one number that applies to your situation. Neither is actually useful when you're staring down a quote and trying to figure out if it's fair.

Local Cost Calculator exists to close that gap. Instead of one flat number, each calculator on this site asks the two or three questions that actually move the price — job type, severity, frequency, size — and shows you a realistic range for your specific situation, built directly from the same national cost-guide research that pricing articles are written from.

Where the numbers come from

Every price range on this site is sourced from established, publicly available cost-guide research — HomeAdvisor, Angi, HomeGuide, AutoZone, and Housecall Pro's own pricing data are cited directly on each calculator page, with a link to the source. We don't invent numbers or scrape random quotes; we take the same published ranges that go into a typical pricing article and turn them into an interactive tool you can adjust to your own job.

What this site is — and isn't

Local Cost Calculator is an independent, free reference tool. We are not a service provider, we don't perform repairs or installations, and we don't hire, vet, or refer contractors. We have no financial relationship with any pest control, plumbing, HVAC, auto repair, pool service, or cleaning company. The estimates here are for budgeting and comparison — a sanity check on a quote you've received, not a substitute for one.

Pricing varies by region, provider, materials, and the specific details of a job in ways a national average can't fully capture. We always recommend getting at least two or three quotes from local, licensed providers before hiring anyone.

How we keep the numbers current

Each calculator page shows the date it was last reviewed. We re-check every range against its cited source at least twice a year, and sooner when a reader or contractor reports that a price looks out of date through our contact page. When a source updates its figures, we update the calculator and the tables on that page together, so the calculator and the text never disagree. The full formula each calculator uses is published on our methodology page.
