Estimate what it costs to replace all the water supply lines in your home with PEX or copper, based on home size and bathrooms.
Last reviewed October 2026 · How we calculate estimates
Repiping replaces the water supply lines throughout a house. Homeowners usually consider it after repeated leaks, discolored water, low pressure, or when a home still has galvanized steel or polybutylene pipe. Most homes cost $4,000 to $15,000 to repipe, and labor is about 70% of the bill, which is why home size and access matter more than the pipe itself.
| Cost breakdown | Range |
|---|
| Home | Typical cost |

Most repipes take two to five days. The plumber cuts small openings in walls and ceilings to run new lines, connects each fixture with a new shut-off valve, and usually restores water at the end of each day. After the city inspects the new piping, the openings are patched. Painting is often not included. Ask whether drywall patching, permits and inspection are in the quote, and protect furniture and floors in the rooms being worked on.
Your home size and pipe material select a published whole-house price range. Drywall, permit, water main and water heater costs are added if you check them. The total is adjusted by your state's BEA Regional Price Parity if you choose a state. See our methodology.
Repiping a house typically costs $4,000 to $10,000 with PEX or $6,000 to $15,000 or more with copper. A 2-bath home runs about $4,000 to $7,500 in PEX and $6,000 to $11,000 in copper.
PEX costs less, installs faster and resists freezing damage. Copper lasts longer, up to 70 to 100 years, and handles heat well. Most whole-house repipes today use PEX.
