Choose the problem to see a typical repair price for a ductless mini split heat pump or air conditioner.
Last reviewed October 2026 · How we calculate estimates
Ductless mini splits use inverter-driven compressors and more electronics than a central system, so parts like control boards and fan motors cost more. Many mini split problems turn out to be simple, though: a clogged filter, a dirty indoor coil or a blocked condensate drain. Pick the repair below to see a typical price range.
| Cost breakdown | Range |
|---|
| Repair | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Cleaning or condensate drain fix | $150 – $500 |
| Sensor, thermistor or small electrical part | $200 – $700 |
| Indoor or outdoor fan motor | $400 – $1,200 |
| Control board or inverter board | $500 – $1,800 |
| Refrigerant leak diagnosis and repair | $500 – $2,500 |
| Compressor or major sealed-system repair | $1,500 – $4,000 |
| Diagnostic visit | $100 – $300 |

Most mini splits show a blinking light pattern or an error code when they shut down. Write it down, along with the brand and model number, before you call. It helps the technician bring the right part and can save a second trip. Codes for a sensor or thermistor usually mean an inexpensive repair. Codes for the inverter board or compressor usually mean an expensive one.
One indoor head shuts off and flashes a sensor code. The technician replaces a failed thermistor. With the diagnostic visit, the calculator shows $300 – $1,000 nationally, or $330 – $1,110 in California.
Many mini split service calls are resolved by cleaning filters and clearing a clogged drain, but anything involving refrigerant or the circuit boards needs a licensed technician.
Each repair uses a published planning range. The diagnostic visit is added if you include it, and the total is adjusted by your state's BEA Regional Price Parity if you choose a state. See our methodology.
Mini split systems typically last about 15 to 20 years with regular cleaning. Repairs to sensors, drains and fan motors are usually worth making at any age. The decision gets harder with a refrigerant leak, an inverter board or a compressor failure on a system that's out of warranty, because those repairs can run $500 to $4,000 or more. Mini split repairs typically cost $150 to $500 for cleaning and drain problems, $200 to $700 for sensors and small electrical parts, $400 to $1,200 for fan motors, $500 to $1,800 for control or inverter boards, and $500 to $2,500 or more for refrigerant leaks.
A mini split diagnostic visit typically costs $100 to $300.
Usually a clogged condensate drain, a dirty filter or coil, or an indoor unit that isn't level. Cleaning and drain repairs typically cost $150 to $500.
